Prior to joining Banki Haddock Fiora, Jake worked at boutique media and entertainment law firms, specialising in defamation, intellectual property, and commercial law. Jake has extensive defamation and media experience, acting for a number of large publishers and broadcasters. Jake’s practice includes not-for-profit structuring advice, prepublication advice, contract, and alternative dispute resolution. He has advised clients in the news media, technology, film, television, and music industries on reputational, structuring, and contentious issues, and regularly advises and appears in relation to suppression orders, access to documents, and urgent interlocutory applications. Jake also advises on commercial legal issues for clients across a range of sectors including hospitality, retail, technology, and media.
Jake has been involved in key IP and defamation litigation including Lehrmann v Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Hayson v The Age Company Pty Limited, Wraydeh v Fairfax Media Publications Pty Limited, O’Neill v Fairfax Media Publications Pty Limited, Larrikin Music Publishing v EMI Songs Australia (the “Kookaburra” copyright infringement case), Liu v The Age Company Pty Limited, and GM Holden v S.S.S. Auto Parts.
Jake has moderated and participated in panel discussions for the Communications and Media Law Associate and LegalWise, and has authored articles on legal issues for publications that include the Sydney Morning Herald, the Communications Law Bulletin, and the Law Society Journal.
